youtube2mp3: A very simple system to download YouTube music videos and convert them to mp3 files

youtube2mp3 is a very simple system to download YouTube music videos and convert them to mp3 files. It is a very short Bash script to provide a GUI for downloading YouTube music videos and convert them to MP3 files. I developed this for my personal use (and to help a few friends), and then thought it would be helpful to others, too. So here it is. (I know there are lots of youtube downloaders and converters out there, I just wanted to hack something very simple but also easy to use and this time I was too lazy to use Python or Perl, or…)

The script currently depends on zenity, youtube-dl and ffmpeg. I have tested it on Ubuntu GNU/Linux machines.

The usage is simple, just make sure that the script file is executable and then type:

./youtube2mp3.sh

If everything goes fine, you’ll have your .mp3 file in the same directory where you invoked the script. The name of the file will be like title_of_youtube_video.mp3 and then you can enjoy offline listening.

If you want to hack the source code, report bugs, submit feature requests, etc.: https://github.com/emres/youtube2mp3
