Integration Course for Belgium: Completed

21 Mar

I have finally finished the integration (Inburgering) programme in Belgium. Completion of this program is obligatory in Belgium for people who stay and work here. It consists of 3 parts, a language course, a job guidance and a social orientation course. Since I already attended and passed the first level of Dutch course at Linguapolis I did not have to attend the course provided by government. And since I was already working I didn’t need job guidance. But no matter what you do, you have to attend the social orientation course and that I did.

If the attendee is university educated then they provide a social orientation course that lasts 5 weeks, that is 1 day per week and 3 hours per day. They also provide evening courses for full-time working people. The syllabus of that social orientation course is mainly about the history of Belgium and its social security system with a special emphasis on health and taxes. I was a little bit prejudiced at the beginning of the course, I thought it was a waste of time but by the end of the course I saw I knew a little bit more about social security than a native Belgian 😉 I also met wonderful people from Spain, USA, Israel, Bolivia, Poland and Brazil.

If you are living and working in Belgium but did not hear about that Inburgering program I can assure you that you’ll hear it sometime soon because it is obligatory and if you refuse to go then you are subject to a financial punishment.

Yet another phase is completed. Now is the time to attend to the Dutch course Niveau 3 (Level 3) at Linguapolis and study very hard to pass the exams.

    Mandatory? That doesn’t sound nice.

Due to differences in migration numbers, Belgium seems to have very different policies compared to Scandinavian countries such as Sweden. And yes, I don’t like its being mandatory, too, but that’s the way it is and this is valid for even EU citizens such as people from Spain.

So, you have basically cheated two thirds of the program 😀

    Fitting for a hacker.
